After a furious rally in the final minute of play, the Dean College Bulldogs saw their buzzer beating layup roll off the rim and fall harmlessly to the Pieri Gymnasium floor, securing an 81-80 victory for the visiting Fitchburg State Falcons in non-league play on Saturday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Dean trailed 79-72 with a minute to go. Two free throws from senior Jordan Booker (Waterbury, Conn.) trimmed the gap to five, and after two missed Falcon free throws, Booker found junior guard Kevin Clark (Miami Gardens, Fla.) on the block for a layup to cut the deficit to three. Clark stole the ensuing inbounds pass and finished a layup in traffic to bring the Bulldogs within one, and two more missed free throws set the Bulldogs up with a chance to win the game on the final possession.
Booker sliced through the defense in the final moments and again found Clark for a scoring opportunity, but the layup rimmed out and Fitchburg held on for the victory.
A back and forth contest with five ties and fifteen lead changes, Fitchburg led by five at the halftime break. Dean scored the first six points of the second half on three pointers from Booker and D'caran Anderson (Compton, Calif.) to quickly wrestle the lead back 42-41.
The evenly matched squads traded baskets over the next fifteen minutes of action, and when Jordan Lynch-Rexroth (Harrisburg, Pa.) nailed a jumpshot with four minutes to play the score was knotted at 70.
Fitchburg scored nine of the next 11 points over a crucial three minute stretch, grabbing control of the game before the Bulldog rally in the closing minute.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Booker finished with 29 points, seven assists, and six rebounds. Anderson scored 14 and added five boards, while Clark finished with 11 points, nine rebounds, five assists, and four steals. Traijan Powell (Sierra Vista, Ariz.) scored nine points of 4-7 shootiing while collecting seven rebounds.
Dean plays at Worcester State at 6:00 on Wednesday evening in non-league action.
