Despite leading for over thirty consecutive minutes of regulation, the Dean College Bulldogs fell in overtime to the Lasell University Lazers 95-87 on Tuesday night at Pieri Gymnasium in Franklin, Mass.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
After Lasell opened an early 7-4 lead, Dean controlled the action for the rest of the first half. An 12-2 run with five minutes remaining in the first half extended the Bulldog lead from one to 11, highlighted by two jumpers from Joel Jones (Fayetteville, N.C.), a layup from D'caran Anderson (Compton, Calif.,) and a three pointer from Jordan Booker (Waterbury, Conn.). The teams traded hoops over the final minutes of the half and Dean entered the break with a 43-36 lead.
The Bulldogs continued to outpace the visitors for the first ten minutes of the second frame, extending their lead to 59-50 on a layup from Ozwaldo Terrazas (Odessa, Texas) with 12 minutes to play.
Lasell scored six straight points over the next minute to close a nine point gap to six. With eight minutes to play, Eric Day hit a three pointer to close the deficit to five, and added back to back layup moments later to trim the lead to one.
After Booker responded with a layup to give Dean a 70-67 lead, Stephan Masciarelli drilled a triple to tie the game at 70. Lasell had threatened for most of the second half, but this was the first tie or lead change since 16:30 in the first half.
Booker scored the Bulldogs next seven points, helping the Bulldogs to wrestle the lead back at 77-74 with a minute and half left to play. After two free throws from Day, Lasell pulled within one with a minute remaining.
After a Bulldog technical foul, Masciarelli scored the next four points for the Lazers (all on free throws) to give the visitors an 80-77 lead in the final moments. A three point dagger from Anderson off a transition feed from Booker tied the game at 80 and sent the action into overtime.
After two early hoops from Jordan Lynch-Rexroth (Harrisburg, Pa.) appeared to give the Bullldogs the overtime momentum, Lasell responded to outplay Dean down the stretch. Day scored seven of his game high 32 points to dominate the final frame, including a three point play in the final minute to put the game out of reach.
