Matt Finke led five players in double figures with 22 points in just 28 minutes and host Mitchell College raced past Dean College, 94-75, in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) men's basketball action on Wednesday evening.
The win for the Mariners is their third straight and pushes them into a three-way tie for first in the league standings with New England College and Eastern Nazarene.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Mitchell held the lead for the majority of the first half, but Jordan Booker (Waterbury, Conn.) did his best to keep the Bulldogs close. The league's leading scorer scored 20 of his game-high 32 points in the first half on a mix of drives to the basket and long three-point attempts. Despite his efforts, Bulldogs found themselves trailing 48-40 at the break.
The Mariners built the margin to double digits early in the second half and played with a big lead throughout. After an 8-0 run left the Mariners with a 69-48 lead with 12:24 to go, Booker responded with a 7-0 run of his own to draw the Bulldogs back to within 14.
Mitchell came right back with 10 unanswered points to slam the door as the lead grew to as many as 28 in the final five minutes.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Booker added four rebounds, three steals and two assists to his stat line, while Joel Jones (Fayetteville, N.C.), Jordan Lynch-Rexroth (Harrisburg, Pa.) and Nick Sampeck (San Antonio, Texas) all totaled eight points.
Dean is off until next Wednesday when they host Lesley University on Senior Night. Tipoff is slated for 6:00 PM.
