In a game that saw neither team shoot better than 40 percent from the field, it was Dean College who took charge late courtesy of some timely free throws enroute to a 64-58 win over Elms College in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) women's basketball action on Tuesday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Bulldogs were clinging to a 54-53 lead with less than five minutes to play when Makayla Rudder (Springfield, Mass.) made a pair of free throws and Stephanie Conrad (Bedford, N.H.) knocked down a three-pointer to give Dean a 59-53 edge with 4:36 left.
Things were still relatively tight at 59-54 when Kayleigh Merrell (Wilmington, N.C.) grabbed an offensive rebound and scored to give the Cardinal and White a 61-54 advantage with 1:27 to play.
Two baskets from the Blazers tightened the gap but the Bulldogs got a single free throw from Rudder and then two more from Sadie Homer (North Easton, Mass.) to seal the win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Rudder, who played all 40 minutes, finished with 19 points, eight rebounds and five assists to lead four Bulldogs in double figures. Ajerah Sidbury (Wilmington, N.C.) totaled a career-best 12 points and seven boards, while Merrell racked up 14 points and ten rebounds.
Conrad, meanwhile, made three three-pointers on her way to ten points in 27 minutes of the bench.
Dean is back in action on Thursday when they travel to Smith College for a non-league affair with the Pioneers. Tipoff is slated for 7:00 PM.
