Women's Basketball Drops NECC Contest Against Mitchell, 78-65

THE LEAD:
Despite another double-double performance from sophomore forward Makayla Rudder (Springfield, Mass.), the Dean College Bulldogs were upended 78-65 by the Mitchell College Mariners in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action on Tuesday night in Franklin, Mass. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Mitchell raced out to an early lead in the opening frame, dominating action from the opening tip.  The Mariners led 17-4 at the end of the first period, guided by Aminah Wiley's 8 points and six rebounds. 

Dean responded midway through the second, closing the gap to 28-17 on a three pointer from Sadie Homer (North Easton, Mass.) and a layup from Rudder.  The visitors counterpunched, closing the period on a 11-2 run to take a 39-19 lead into the halftime break. 

Midway through the third period, a Sam Mckenna three pointer opened up the Mitchell lead to 55-27 and the visitors maintined a steady advantage, heading into the fourth quarter up 66-44.  

Dean closed the deficit late in the fourth, cutting the lead to 76-63 with over a minute to play, but the Bulldogs ran out of time and Mitchell held on for the 78-65 victory. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Rudder dominated both ends of the floor, finishing with 26 points and 14 rebounds. Stephanie Conrad (Bedford, N.H.) hit four three pointers and scored 12 points while Homer added nine points, seven assists and four rebounds off the bench. 

Mitchell shot 45% from the field while the Bulldogs struggled, shooting 36% overall and 26% from three point range. The Bulldogs out rebounded Mitchell 41-34 but the visitors led 36-30 in points in the paint and 25-15 in points off turnovers.
