Elms College made four free throws in the final six seconds and the visiting Blazers escaped with a 63-60 win over Dean College in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) women's basketball action on Tuesday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The host Bulldogs erased a 15 point deficit in the third quarter and eventually took a 60-59 lead on a Sitaara Muhammad (Cambridge, Mass.) layup with nine seconds left.
Regina LeBlanc, however, made a pair of free throws with six seconds left to put Elms back in front, but Dean had another chance to take the lead.
Makayla Rudder (Springfield, Mass.) was able to get the ball but her shot from inside the paint missed and the Bulldogs were forced to foul with less than a second remaining.
Things looked bleak for Dean early on but they made their push in the fourth quarter as Muhammad and Rudder combined for 20 of the Bulldogs' 27 points to eventually put them in front in the waning seconds before the Blazers, who went 8-for-8 from the free throw line in the final period, sealed the win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Rudder ended with 28 points and nine rebounds, while Muhammad finished with 15 points and Alexah Potter (Hartford, Conn.) collected five points, 11 rebounds and five blocked shots.
Dean is back in action on Thursday when they step out of conference play with a meeting against Albertus Magnus. Tipoff is slated for 7:00 PM.
