Ashley Rufo pumped in eight goals, including six in the second half and visiting Anna Maria held off Dean College, 16-10, in non-league women's lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
It was Dean who held an early 3-1 lead after scores from Jasmine Sztyler-Magee (Burlington, Conn.), Ann Bosio (Canaan, Conn.) and Maire Brown (Huntington, N.Y.) in the game's first seven minutes.
Anna Maria responded by running off six straight goals – three from Bryce McDonald – to take a 7-3 edge.
The Bulldogs closed the half by tightening the game with three consecutive strikes of their own from Lauryn Wilks (Hartford, Conn.), Brown and a man-up tally from Bosio, sending the game into intermission with Anna Maria in front, 7-6.
Dean's offense continued its attack as Wilks and Brown evened the game with Brown's third of the afternoon less than a minute into the second stanza.
A few minutes later, the score was knotted again at 8-8 following a sensational over the shoulder, no-look goal from Bosio at 25:08, but the AMCATS went on a game-changing five-goal run over the next ten minutes to take a 13-8 advantage.
Sztyler-Magee broke the streak when she took a feed from Jessica Foley (Wrentham, Mass.) and raced through the defense for her second of the game.
Dean got one final goal from Sztyler-Magee but Rufo put the game away with back-to-back scores in the final five minutes.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Bosio, Brown and Sztyler-Magee finished with three goals each, while Wilks ended with a goal and an assist.
Jada Fields (Acushnet, Mass.) made eight saves in goal for the Bulldogs.
Dean is off until Saturday, March 14 when they visit Clark University at 3:00 PM.
